Life rarely goes entirely to plan. Challenges, setbacks and unexpected changes can test our confidence, challenge our beliefs and leave us wondering what to do next.
But resilience and emotional intelligence are skills we can develop. And sometimes the smallest change in how we think, respond or act can make an extraordinary difference.

When plans fail and progress stalls.

When the voice in our head becomes a barrier.

When the way forward is difficult to see.

When circumstances demand a different approach.
We all experience moments when the future looks less certain than we would like. A business encounters difficulties. A relationship changes. A long-held ambition seems further away than ever. Or we simply find ourselves questioning whether we are capable of what we once believed possible.
These moments can affect our confidence, decisions and willingness to act.
But they need not define what happens next.
The ability to recognise what we are feeling, understand what is happening and choose our next response is where resilience begins.

Resilience is often misunderstood.
It is not about pretending everything is fine, suppressing emotion or pushing forward regardless of the consequences.
It is about developing the ability to recover, adapt and respond constructively when circumstances become difficult.
Emotional intelligence plays an important part in that process.
When we become more aware of our emotions, better able to manage our responses and more understanding of the people around us, we give ourselves more choices.
And choice matters.
While we cannot control everything that happens around us, we can often influence how we interpret events, what we learn from them and the actions we take next.
Resilience is not simply about getting back to where you were. Sometimes it is about growing beyond it.

Recognise what you are feeling, what influences your thinking and how it affects your decisions.

Learn to create space between an emotional reaction and a considered response.

Question assumptions, look for alternative explanations and discover different possibilities.

Build stronger relationships through empathy, communication and understanding.

Turn learning and reflection into the next useful step, however small that step may be.
The ideas behind Keep Moving are explored through my books, articles and practical learning resources. Each looks at a different part of resilience, emotional intelligence, personal development and the choices that shape our lives.

Bounce — The Story of Resilience is a book by entrepreneur and writer Chris Batten centred on resilience and the experience of recovering from adversity. It sits within Batten’s broader work of turning lessons from personal challenges and an entrepreneurial career into accessible, practical material.
The idea behind the book
The title’s “bounce” metaphor frames resilience as the capacity to respond constructively when circumstances knock a person off course.
Chris’s public biography emphasises learning from experience, organising that knowledge, and translating it into decisive action—ideas that provide useful context for the book’s practical orientation.
The author’s perspective
Chris writes from an entrepreneurial and lived-experience perspective rather than presenting himself primarily as an academic researcher. His biography describes a career involving the launch, growth, and sale of multiple businesses, international company leadership roles, and personal challenges including dyslexia; writing and presenting developed alongside lessons from mentors and his own business journey.
Where it fits
The book is part of Chris’s wider educational work through ChrisBatten.UK, a platform aimed particularly at small-business owners and built around short, focused learning materials. The library currently features Bounce — The Story of Resilience among its products
Its distinguishing feature is the connection between resilience and accumulated experience: setbacks become material from which future decisions and actions can be shaped. That makes Bounce particularly well suited to readers interested in personal development through an entrepreneurial lens rather than a heavily theoretical treatment of resilience.
My interest in resilience is not simply academic.
Over the years, I have experienced situations that challenged my confidence, tested my judgement and forced me to reconsider what I believed about myself and the world around me.
Some experiences were deeply rewarding. Others were difficult, uncomfortable and, at times, painful.
But they taught me something important: we are often capable of considerably more than we recognise, particularly when we begin to understand how our thinking influences our decisions and actions.
I am still learning. I expect I always will be.
Through my writing and the Studio, I want to share ideas, experiences and practical approaches that might help you find your own way forward.

You do not have to resolve every difficulty or know exactly where the journey will lead.
Sometimes, the most useful thing you can do is begin with a different perspective, a better question or one small action.
Keep thinking. Keep learning. Keep moving.
